Warning: Utility Customers Being Targeted in New Scam

There is a new scam spreading rapidly throughout the nation targeting utility customers to give out personal information. Members of electric cooperatives, like WIN Energy REMC, are being contacted by phone, text message and through social media and being told that President Obama has authorized the federal government to pay their electric bill if they provide their bank routing number and their social security number.

THIS IS A SCAM. WIN Energy encourages members to ignore any solicitation of personal information, such as banking information and social security numbers and report any suspicious contacts to the proper authority.
